How We Helped a Battery Testing Company Scale Across 6 European Languages through Machine Translation Post-Editing (MTPE)

Alconost has been providing AVILOO with machine translation post-editing (MTPE) services since 2022. Their core problem was lack of time and human resources to manage an increasing volume of marketing translations.

Because of us, by 2024, they were able to continuously deliver content in 6 European languages, as well as break into 3 additional markets through their international marketing campaigns.

The Client

AVILOO is an Austrian tech company founded in 2017. They specialize in battery diagnostics for electric and hybrid vehicles. AVILOO has developed independent testing procedures to assess the condition of lithium-ion batteries in these cars. Their goal is to give customers more transparency on vehicle value when buying or selling.

"We're proud of doing something absolutely new in one of the newest industries! Because we believe that our innovative battery testing solution addresses contemporary challenges, we've been actively expanding to new markets in recent years. To us, proper communication is pivotal. We need to convey the value of our product and why battery testing is actually necessary," says Radinka Danilov Sehovic, Senior Marketing & Communications Expert at AVILOO.

Alconost has been providing AVILOO with machine translation post-editing (MTPE) services since 2022. The work is done through Crowdin, an online platform the AVILOO team was already familiar with. An Alconost localization project manager oversees the process, so AVILOO doesn't have to micromanage.

Let's take a closer look at how this partnership started and how it proceeds!

The Challenge

In the early stages of going international, AVILOO used machine translation and had a few of their own native speakers proofread the content. The work is done through Crowdin, an online platform the AVILOO team was already familiar with. But as the project expanded, with more content and target languages (6 European languages), managing all those native editors became increasingly time-consuming.

Finding, vetting, scheduling, and paying native speakers to post-edit each language just took too much time and effort for AVILOO to handle internally. They realized they needed to outsource this localization work.

“We started to seek an external vendor who would seamlessly intercept our localization routine so that we'd keep on with continuous localization in a way we used to," says Radinka Danilov Sehovic.

The Search

When searching for a localization company, AVILOO was looking for someone who:

  • Works on the Crowdin cloud localization platform, which allows for custom integrations, automation, API, and CLI to streamline translation tasks
  • Can adapt to AVILOO's established localization process rather than imposing a brand new workflow
  • Covers the required languages (Danish, Dutch, French, Italian, Norwegian, Swedish, plus occasional Spanish, Simplified Chinese, and Finnish) with native-speaking professional linguists;
  • Translates from both English and German as source languages
  • Offers transparent pricing that fits AVILOO's strict budget requirements

When exploring their options, AVILOO reached out to Alconost to discuss potential collaboration.

To test the fit, the AVILOO team started with a trial machine translation post-editing (MTPE) project. This allowed our teams to establish the right workflow and communication. After several more online meetings, they were ready to sign the contract.

But don't just take our word for it - here's what AVILOO said were the key reasons they chose Alconost over other vendors:

  1. We fully met their technical requirements.

"What we liked most is that they know exactly how to work with Crowdin and provide MTPE services. It definitely matched our needs 100%!"

    Radinka Danilov Sehovic

  2. We fully met their budget requirements.

“When we discussed the pricing and terms, everything seemed good to me, Alconost's offer was quite competitive."

    Radinka Danilov Sehovic

  3. We were easy to deal with. 🙂

"We liked the smooth communication style of their account manager. Nastassia's replies were always prompt and to the point."

    Radinka Danilov Sehovic

The Solution

As we started working with AVILOO, here's how we tailored our localization and translation services:

  • MTPE Quality: We tested multiple machine translation engines for free and selected the best ones for each target language based on human evaluations. This led to higher-quality initial outputs, faster turnaround, and lower costs.
  • Volume: We handled all of AVILOO's content needs, including UI strings, website copy, leaflets, and B2B documents across their growing international customer base. As Radinka from AVILOO put it, "With Alconost, we can handle all our localization, no matter the format, language, or scope.
  • Management: We set up a dashboard to help AVILOO's team track all their localization tasks and costs. This transparency allowed them to easily monitor priorities and ask questions.
  • Communication: We have a dedicated Slack channel for daily chats and quick updates, which helps both sides maintain a productive and transparent workflow.

As Radinka shared,"Their customer support is perfect. The way they care about our needs exceeds my expectations."

We fully reciprocate Radinka’s excitement, too:

"Thanks to the AVILOO's approach, we've established a highly productive workflow that's transparent to the client. Their support and our understanding of the routine help us establish rapport and avoid bottlenecks throughout our journey. I enjoy our relationship and communication very much!," says Diana, Localization Project Manager at Alconost.

The Results

What are some positive outcomes for AVILOO from working with Alconost - besides a fully established localization process?

  1. Increased market reach: By 2024, they were able to continuously deliver content in 6 European languages, as well as break into 3 additional markets through their international marketing campaigns.
  2. Faster time-to-market: In the fast-paced world of marketing, you can't afford to be late with your communications. By leveraging machine translation post-editing, we were able to deliver translations around 1.5 times faster than traditional localization methods.
  3. Cost optimization: AVILOO found a sweet spot working with Alconost - they were able to manage their localization within budget constraints, while still getting the resources they needed. The machine translation post-editing approach resulted in 30-40% cost savings compared to typical localization projects, without compromising quality.
  4. Uncompromising quality: Third-party evaluators in China, France, and the Netherlands all reviewed Alconost's work and couldn't find anything that needed improvement.
